Habits of the Heart, Then and Now – A 40th Anniversary Retrospective

This virtual webinar featured a 40th anniversary retrospective of the classic book, Habits of the Heart: Individualism and Commitment in American Life, with its four living authors—Richard Madsen, William Sullivan, Ann Swidler, and Steven Tipton. The authors were interviewed by Galen Watts, Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo and Associator Director at the Institute for Religion, Culture, and Societal Futures at St. Jerome’s University about the valuable, and increasingly urgent, lessons Habits has to teach us in the twenty-first century.

Galen Watts, a Bellah Legacy Group Member, was motivated to organize this zoom event from his long history with the Habits of the Heart book. The book was a motivating force behind his own book, The Spiritual Turn.
